How to Clean the Inside of Your Windshield Streak-Free (and Stop It Fogging Up)

YK Auto Detailing6 min read

If oncoming headlights turn your windshield into a blur of glare at night, the problem is often on the inside of the glass. A hazy film builds up there slowly, so slowly that most drivers don't notice until they clean it and suddenly see clearly again.

That same film also gives moisture something to cling to, which makes fogging worse on cold, damp Halifax mornings. Here's how to clean the inside of your windshield properly and keep it clear.

Where the haze on the inside of your windshield comes from

Several sources contribute. Vinyl and plastic dashboard materials release plasticizers over time, especially when the car sits in the sun, and those condense on the cool glass. Add in fingerprints, breath, cooking smells carried on clothing, dust from the vents, and dressing products sprayed on the dash. If anyone smokes or vapes in the car, that residue builds up much faster.

The result is a thin oily film that smears when you wipe it with the wrong towel, which is why so many people say they cleaned the windshield and made it worse.

The two-towel method for a streak-free windshield

Use two clean, dry microfibre towels: one for cleaning, one for buffing. Paper towels leave lint and household rags often hold fabric softener residue that causes streaks.

Spray the glass cleaner onto the first towel instead of the glass, so overspray doesn't land on the dashboard. Wipe the glass in overlapping horizontal passes, then immediately buff dry with the second towel using vertical passes. On the outside of the glass, do the opposite. If you see a streak afterward, its direction tells you which side it's on.

  • Two clean microfibre towels: one to clean, one to buff
  • Spray the towel, not the glass
  • Horizontal passes inside, vertical passes outside
  • Use a windshield reach tool for the bottom corners behind the dash
  • Do it in the shade, since a warm windshield dries the cleaner before you can wipe it

Choosing a glass cleaner that's safe for tint

If your car has aftermarket window tint, use an ammonia-free glass cleaner. Ammonia can break down tint film over time, causing bubbling or discolouration. Ammonia-free automotive glass cleaners are safe on all glass and plastics, so they're a good default for every vehicle.

For a really heavy film, a first pass with a little isopropyl alcohol diluted with water on a towel cuts through the oils, followed by your normal glass cleaner.

How to stop your windshield fogging up inside

Interior fog is moisture from inside the car condensing on cold glass. In Nova Scotia that moisture comes from wet boots, snow melting into the carpet, damp coats, and humid outdoor air. The fastest way to clear it is to turn on the defrost with the air conditioning on, set to fresh air rather than recirculate. The A/C dries the air, even in winter, and fresh air brings in drier outside air.

If your windows fog up constantly, look for a moisture source: soaked floor mats, damp carpet under the mats, or a leak. Constant fogging is often the first sign of a wet interior that can turn musty.

How to Clean the Inside of Your Windshield Streak-Free (and Stop It Fogging Up) · common questions

What is the film on the inside of my windshield?

Mostly plasticizers released by dashboard materials, mixed with skin oils, dust, and residue from smoke, vaping, or interior dressings. It builds slowly and causes glare at night.

How do I clean the inside of my windshield without streaks?

Use two clean microfibre towels. Spray an ammonia-free glass cleaner onto the first towel, wipe in horizontal passes, then buff dry with the second towel. Work in the shade so the cleaner doesn't dry too fast.

Is Windex safe for tinted car windows?

Original formulas with ammonia can damage aftermarket tint film over time. Use an ammonia-free glass cleaner on tinted windows.

What is the fastest way to defog a windshield?

Turn on the front defrost with the air conditioning on and set the system to fresh air, not recirculate. The A/C removes moisture from the air, which clears fog faster than heat alone.

Why does my car windshield fog up so much?

Excess moisture inside the car, usually from wet floor mats, damp carpet, snow tracked in, or a leak. A dirty windshield also fogs more easily because moisture clings to the film.
